Rx: Mangosteen Juice to Quell Inflammation

When you cut your finger, bruise a knee, or catch the flu, inflammation acts as a friend, rallying the body’s immune system to defend against microbes and heal the injury or illness. But when the immune response never shuts off, that chronic low-level inflammation irritates the body and can raise the risk of diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. While researchers haven’t untangled all the mechanisms behind this yet, hyperactive immune cells can, for example, destabilize cholesterol deposits, setting the stage for heart attack, or they can destroy nerve cells in those predisposed to Alzheimer’s.

Chronic inflammation–triggered by everything from the typical Western diet of processed, sugary foods to irritated bowels, inflamed gums, and autoimmune disease–can be detected with tests that measure levels of C-reactive protein (an inflammation marker) and white blood cell counts. You don’t need a test, however, to take proactive steps against inflammation. A diet high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, spices like turmeric, magnesium-rich foods, olive oil, and omega-3 fatty acids all help douse the flames.

Another star “firefighter” is mangosteen juice. Native to tropical locales such as Thailand, the mangosteen fruit looks nothing at all like a mango (or a beer stein, for that matter). What sets this tangerine-size fruit apart are its high levels of xanthones, powerful antioxidants that have garnered growing attention from medical researchers. So far, they’ve isolated 220 types of xanthones–42 of which are found in mangosteen. Xanthones dampen inflammation by inhibiting the action of key inflammatory enzymes like COX-2 and 5-LOX. An in vitro study, presented in March at the American Chemical Society’s National Meeting found that concentrated mangosteen (specifically Mango-xan Antioxidant Recovery Formula made by Pure Fruit Technologies) reduced the activity of these enzymes by about 98 percent.

No one’s yet studied the effect mangosteen has on humans, but anecdotal evidence supports the anti-inflammatory claims, with “people who regularly take a mangosteen product reporting relief from chronic pain,” says Wayne Geilman, Ph.D., of Pure Fruit Technologies.

While custom laws prevent merchants from importing the entire mangosteen to the United States, you can buy several types of concentrates and purees in natural food stores. Some companies, like Genesis Today, offer pure mangosteen juice, while others, like Pure Fruit Technologies, Trace Minerals, and Dynamic Health Laboratories, offer blends of the fruit’s juice, flesh, and rind, which may pack more potency.

Xango Radio Tonight, with Charlie Emmenecker

Hi Everybody,

Wow, Just got my recent blood test results and my doctor was happy and surprised!!!! I have been on Xango Juice for a little over 5 years and have better numbers now than in the last 15 years. I was introduced to Xango at 56 years old and I thought I was in pretty good health, all vital sign were normal except in the area of cholesterol. That changed with Xango. I am now 62 almost.

Here are the results. Good Cholesterol HDL 61 (almost double in 5 years) Cholesterol ratio 2.1 (very good), CRP (C-Reactive Protein which is the measurement of cardio- inflammation) 1.5, the normal scale is 1 to 3. many people are in double digits these days. Prostate PSA 0.24 (almost nothing!!) Blood Pressure which for years was 120ish over 80ish has been lowered to 110 ish to 70ish or less. We found out that my thyroid is low so I have begun to use an Iodine supplement, I was told I live in the goiter belt. My doc said “I am not surprised, since I have been on Xango juice the last 3 years I have seen the same results!) and he is 58.

Ok, so what does this mean? It means that when someone tells you that they are healthy and don’t need to use Xango give them this story. “it is not how long you live, it is how well you live long”.

Mangosteen Juice - The Truth Is In The Taste

What is Mangosteen Juice?

It is juice made from the fruit of the mangosteen tree. That is the short (and smart aleck) answer. Mangosteen juice is also a nutritional supplement with powerful health benefits.

Mangosteen trees are probably native to Southeast Asia. That is where they grow best. They are difficult to cultivate in the Western hemisphere, and they require a subtropical climate, with temperatures never dropping below 45°F. The fruit is delicate and does not ship well. Benefits of Mangosteen Juice

We do not know for sure what all of the benefits of mangosteen juice are yet. Research is being done, but the results are preliminary, so we cannot say for certain which of the claims made about mangosteen juice are true.

A Look at Xanthones and Mangosteen

We've all heard the news for years about how important it is to get the right amount of antioxidants in order to keep our bodies healthy and ward of disease. Now there's a new classification of antioxidants called xanthones, first discovered in the mangosteen fruit, which are poised to be one of the biggest discoveries of modern science in terms of health benefits.

While the concept of antioxidants may seem even more confusing when adding in another aspect, xanthones are fairly easy to understand, given their clear-cut, scientifically-proven benefits.

What are Xanthones?

Technically put, xanthones are a set of chemical compounds that can be synthetically produced, but are more often found and more potent in their natural settings. Xanthones are powerful antioxidants in a family of phytonutrients.

To date, researchers have discovered and classified approximately 200 xanthones, 40 of which are found in the mangosteen fruit. As a matter of fact, xanthones were first discovered when scientists began studying the health benefits of mangosteen based on its traditional indigenous medical uses.

Research into the medicinal properties of xanthones found in the mangosteen began in the 1970s, and gradually picked up pace as scientists began finding more exciting nutritional properties. Between 1996 and 2005, an exponential amount of research has been done in regards to mangosteen and its xanthones, and even more studies are in the works.

Xanthones in Mangosteen

To recap, xanthones are powerful antioxidants, and out of the 200 xanthones known to science, 40 of them are found in mangosteen.

But what do the antioxidant properties of the xanthones in mangosteen do for you? Antioxidants function as a balance for free radicals in the body. Free radicals are potentially harmful, yet oftentimes natural substances in your body that, when left free reign, build up and cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and more.

The xanthones function to travel through your body, literally mopping up the free radicals on their way, leaving your body cleaner and healthier than before.

Known Benefits of Xanthones

Scientific research has made it abundantly clear that no other fruit compares in its health benefits to mangosteen, due to its xanthones and other nutritional properties.

Helping to fight cancer is just one of the many properties that different xanthones perform. For instance, one study performed in Japan showed that the xanthone alpha-mangostin had apparent properties that suppressed the development of tumors. Another, performed in China, found the xanthone garcinone E to show significant anticancer effects in terms of liver, lung, and gastric cancer cells.

In addition, some xanthones have shown significant antimicrobial effects in terms of fighting MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus), which is a bacterial strain known for its tenacious resistance to pharmacologic antibiotics. One scientific study also showed that alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, and garcinone B to have pronounced inhibition effects on a strain of tuberculosis.

As if that isn't enough, xanthones have also been scientifically proven to help lower LDL, the bad cholesterol, by protecting the LDL from coming into contact with free radicals, thus leaving it unable to oxidize and attach to arterial walls and cause atherosclerosis.

Taking into account the anticancer, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and cholesterol-lowering effects of the xanthones found in mangosteen, here is just a sampling of the other many benefits that science has either researched or is in the process of discovering:

Many Serious Diseases Linked to Inflammation

Many researchers and scientists are starting to think that the key to good health may come by studying inflammation and how it works. Much of this information was summed up in a 2004 Time Magazine cover story which can be found here:

It is a very interesting article that describes how inflammation might play a major role in the advancement of serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, TB, arthritis, and heart disease.

It also talks about how people with lower levels of C-Reactive Protien, an inflammation indicator, are less likely to contract these diseases.

The article also discusses how the levels of COX-2 and free radicals affect the body.

There have also been many studies about how the mangosteen fruit may reduce inflammation levels in the human body, as the following article indicates:

Testimonial - Mangosteen and Cancer

Hopefully this will inspire others to try the 21-day challenge for major health issues.


This is my journey through being diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer.
In July of 2007 I went to get my bloodpressure medicine refilled at the doctor.
The doctor said she felt a "thickening" in my neck.
At that point she wasn't even sure it was my thyriod.
It just so happened I went to the ENT the next Friday with one of my children.
I had mentioned it to him.
He sat me in the chair and felt my neck.
He said yes it was my thyriod, he felt three nodules.
He biopsied them in the office.
I had never had a needle biopsy before, I was really scared.
The results came back that the cells in the nodules were known to cause cancer.
He sent me for another test called a thyroid scan and uptake.
The results came back that the nodules were cold which ment it was cancer.
I was scheduled for surgery on October 3, 2007. I was told that if it was cancer he would remove my entire thyroid.
They biopsied the nodules in surgery and said no it wasn't cancer.
We were elated for about a week.
I went back in for a follow-up check up, was told that it WAS cancer ,and I had to have a second surgery immediately to remove the rest of my thyroid.
On October 17th I went in for a second surgery. Needless to say I was weak and not feeling well at all. They gave me a couple of weeks to rest and gave me an Isotope 131 radiation treatment.
I was isolated for 4 days from everyone, and on a special low iodine diet.
Yuck.
I was allowed to eat 5oz of plain chicken a day, matzo, fruits and veggies.
I lost 20 lbs.
I got sick from the treatment and was throwing up radiation.
I burned all my tastebuds, and still don't have all of them back. I can taste but things don't taste the same as they use to.
I was so tired and weak from the treatment that it was hard to go Christmas shopping, or enjoy the holidays.
I had a body scan and discovered the cancer spread to my sinuses and lungs.
At that point I figured my life couldn't get any worse, then I met Carol Trenka and Karen Veverka.
When Carol heard I had cancer she sprang into action, and had me talk to Karen about Xango.
She said there was a 21 day cancer challenge and wanted me to participate.
I gave it a shot.
I just received my bloodwork back on Feburary 22, 2008.
My doctor said my bloodwork is "excellent."
He said I would not have to have another treatment. I will have more tests done in May to see if the cancer spread anywere else, beside my thyroid , lung, and sinuses.
I have been taking Xango since January 3rd and have never felt better.
I have energy and can finally do the things I couldn't do three months ago.
Even my asthma is better.
I have not used my inhaler in 3 weeks
I love life now and am able to keep up with everyone now.
I owe my life to Karen Veverka, Carol Trenka and Xango.
I hopefully will be around a long time to see my 4 children grow up.
They say there are angels on this earth and I am glad that God sent Karen and Carol to save my life with Xango!

Mangosteen "21 Day Challenge"

Recently, someone asked me how the Xango "21 Day Challenge" works, when faced with critical health issues such as cancer. (Hope you are doing better, A.).


The best explanation I have found is at Mangosteen Healthy Option, so thanks to them, and here it is:


1. Drink 1 whole bottle of Xango juice (about 25 oz.) per day for 21 days

2. PLUS about a gallon of distilled or purified water.

The “21-Day Challenge” proposes that individuals who have critical health problems — just about any form of cancer — issue a challenge to their health condition by committing themselves to drink an entire 25 oz. bottle of Xango juice each day for a period of 21 days, **PLUS** drinking at least one gallon (eight 16 oz. glasses) of pure water—such as spring or distilled water—along with the juice. The 4 to 6 hour half-life of Xango juice in the body would suggest that the consumption of both juice and water be spread out somewhat evenly throughout the 24 hours.

This is important in order to flush the toxins from the body. The only probable uncomfortable thing about it is the need to go to a toilet many times!

**NOTE: It is essential that the recommended amount of water be consumed along with the juice. As the Xango juice is consumed, the cells begin to function normally to clear and release toxins into the blood stream—and these toxins must be eliminated from the body. The rule of thumb for water consumption is 1/2 ounce for every pound of body weight for those who are sedentary, or 2/3 ounce for every pound of body weight for those who are active. For example, if you weight 100 pounds and are not active you would drink 50 ounces of water.

To make sure you are drinking all the water you need, find a large pitcher and fill it in the morning, making sure to consume all of the water before evening (refilled as necessary). Otherwise, you will think you’ve had enough water, but in fact, that is seldom the case!

(If you are unable to drink the required water, it is better to use less Xango juice)

Recommended intake per day:

BREAKFAST
20 min before breakfast:
drink 1/3 bottle Xango juice
NO distilled water consumed until right before lunch

LUNCH
30 min before lunch:
drink 1/3 gallon distilled water
10 min later
drink 1/3 bottle of Xango juice
20 min later
eat & enjoy lunch!

DINNER
30 min before dinner:
drink 1/3 gallon distilled water
10 min later
drink 1/3 bottle of mangosteen juice
20 min later
eat & enjoy dinner!

Drink the remaining 1/3 gallon distilled water
spread out over the rest of the day.

Cancer Testimonial - 21 Day Challenge

I want to share with you what Mangosteen juice has done for me. I developed Cancer last year (2006). I had 1 big tumor in the Colon. My cancer count was as high as 291. I was not drinking the juice at the time of my attack because I thought I was healthy enough not to.
Wrong... my Xango upline kicked it into high gear and sent me the juice for the 21 day challenge with the juice (that is drinking one bottle a day with 4 liters of water for 21 days).
I had my 1st chemo after the challenge. 20 days later I got my tests back and my numbers went down to 80. Second treatment blood count down to 10. I did a PET scan and they found another tumor of the same size(7ml) on my liver. I got it removed after 6 chemo treatments they found the tumor was dead. I was drinking 6oz per day after the 21 day challenge and my doctor was aware of it.
The nurse told me my CEA count would never go past 10 ever again. My tumor shrunk from 7ml to 3ml in 2 treatments. After all 12 treatments I did my last PET/CT scan and they found another piece of tumor that was left from the last surgery. I am going to the liver specalist this week and doing a resect. They tell me it is a live tumor but my CEA count is at 9 and they say my liver is very healthy. I feel great and people even say I look great (healthy) and I would have to say that the tumor is most likely dead as well. It is only 2ml in size and that was over 3 months ago. I will let you know how things turn out after the new year.

Testimonial - Brain Tumors

CHRIS: BEATING STAGE 4 BRAIN CANCER

After suffering from headaches for months, I had a seizure in late September of 2006. When I awoke, I learned that I had been out for 1 1/2 days! In that time I was air flown to UCSF for emergency surgery to remove 2 tumors, a golf ball sized and another smaller one, from the left side of my brain. Unfortunately, a 3rd tumor could not be removed, as that would have left me unable to talk and possibly paralyze my entire left side. This tumor was of a kind known as a Glioblastoma multiforme tumor. I researched it online. Here is an excerpt from a Wikipedia definition:

Glioblastoma multiforme

(GBM), also known as grade 4 astrocytoma, is the most common

and aggressive type of primary brain tumor, accounting for 52% of all primary brain tumor cases and 20% of all intracranial tumors. Despite being the most prevalent form of primary brain tumor, GBM's occur at only 2-3 cases per 100,000 people in Europe and North America. Treatment can involve chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery; all of which are acknowledged as palliative measures, meaning that they do not provide a cure. The five year survival rate of the disease has remained unchanged over the past 30 years, and stands at less than three percent. Even with complete surgical resection of the tumor, combined with the best available treatment, the survival rate for GBM remains very low.

I was told that I had 6 months to live. Within 6 weeks, I was on chemo and radiation therapies with no effect. In fact, my first MRI results from this showed that the tumor had actually DOUBLED in size!

I put out an email to my local community asking if anyone knew of anything that may help me. Richard is a friend that had just been introduced to Mangosteen Juice himself and learned that it was effective in a number of areas, including the breaking down of tumors. He said he didn't know if it would work for me, but perhaps I would be open to trying it. I laughed. "Rich, my doctors gave me six months to live! You bet I will try it!"

I went on the '21 day challenge', drinking 1 bottle a day for 21 days, along with plenty of filtered water. After 11 days of drinking the juice, I had my second MRI. I couldn't believe it! My tumor had SHRUNK and all cancer activity in my brain STOPPED! I was screaming with joy and called all my friends and relatives! My parents were in tears!

Earlier, when it was first suggested that I do chemo to combat the tumor, I was told that one of the side effects was death! To me, that was not an option and I decided to stop all chemo and radiation therapies.

I continued drinking the mangosteen juice, cutting back to 1/2 bottle a day for the next month. My next MRI came in showing the tumor continuing to shrink. I was so excited! I am getting my life back! This tumor does not have a chance!

During my 1Oth week of drinking the juice, I went in to get my fourth MRI. The radiologist was too busy to meet with me. Fortunately, I was with a friend that had experience reading MRI's so we rushed on home to look at it on my laptop computer. We were puzzled with what we saw, or rather DIDN’T see. Calling the radiologist, I asked why I didn’t see anything on this MRI. He pulled it up on his screen, looked at it and laughed. "That is because IT’S NOT THERE! You NO LONGER HAVE A TUMOR,

my friend!" My oncologist was stunned as well! I could not believe it! MY TUMOR WAS GONE! I spent the rest of the day and into the evening calling all of my relatives and friends! Originally, my doctors told me that I should have been DEAD 2 months ago! I have my LIFE back!

I continue drinking the Mangosteen juice as a preventative. I also highly recommend maintaining an alkaline diet, and meditation to keep a positive outlook on your future. I don’t know if this miracle juice will do the same for anyone out there suffering from a tumor, but am I glad that Richard introduced it to me. If not, I probably would not be here today.

Study: Dark-Colored Fruits and Veggies Fight Cancer

The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice, so goes the saying.

But it turns out the darker berry or plum or grape, for that matter, the stronger the cancer-fighting properties.

Researchers conducting a recent study found that the compounds that give some fruits and vegetables their rich colors are powerful cancer deterrants.

Evidence from laboratory experiments on rats and on human colon cancer cells also suggests that anthocyanins, the compounds that give color to most red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables, also slow the growth of colon cancer cells.

"These foods contain many compounds, and we're just starting to figure out what they are and which ones provide the best health benefits," said Monica Giusti, the lead author of the study and an assistant professor of food science at Ohio State University , in a news release.

The findings, which Giusti presented August 19 at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, in Boston, also bring scientists a step closer to figuring out what gives fruits and vegetables their cancer-fighting properties.

Giusti and her colleagues found that in some cases, slight alterations to the structure of anthocyanin molecules made these compounds more potent anti-cancer agents.

In their studies on human colon cells grown in laboratory dishes, the researchers tested the anti-cancer effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts from a variety of fruits and vegetables. They retrieved these anthocyanins from grapes, radishes, purple corn, chokeberries, bilberries, purple carrots and elderberries.

The plants were chosen due to their extremely deep colors and high anthocyanin content.

The researchers found that the amount of anthocyanin extract needed to reduce cancer cell growth by 50 percent varied among the plants. Extract derived from purple corn was the most potent and used the least amount of extract (14 micrograms per milliliter of cell growth solution) to cut cell numbers in half.

Chokeberry and bilberry extracts were nearly as potent as purple corn. Radish extract was the least potent and it took nine times as much (131 milligrams per milliliter) of this compound to cut cell growth by 50 percent.

"All fruits and vegetables that are rich in anthocyanins have compounds that can slow down the growth of colon cancer cells, whether in experiments in laboratory dishes or inside the body," Giusti said.

In additional laboratory studies, researchers found that anthocyanin pigments from radish and black carrots slowed the growth of cancer cells anywhere from 50 to 80 percent.

Pigments from purple corn and chokeberries not only completely stopped the growth of cancer cells, but also killed almost 20 percent of the cancer cells while having little effect on healthy cells.
