Study: Dark-Colored Fruits and Veggies Fight Cancer

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice, so goes the saying.

But it turns out the darker berry or plum or grape, for that matter, the stronger the cancer-fighting properties.

Researchers conducting a recent study found that the compounds that give some fruits and vegetables their rich colors are powerful cancer deterrants.

Evidence from laboratory experiments on rats and on human colon cancer cells also suggests that anthocyanins, the compounds that give color to most red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables, also slow the growth of colon cancer cells.

"These foods contain many compounds, and we're just starting to figure out what they are and which ones provide the best health benefits," said Monica Giusti, the lead author of the study and an assistant professor of food science at Ohio State University , in a news release.

The findings, which Giusti presented August 19 at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, in Boston, also bring scientists a step closer to figuring out what gives fruits and vegetables their cancer-fighting properties.

Giusti and her colleagues found that in some cases, slight alterations to the structure of anthocyanin molecules made these compounds more potent anti-cancer agents.

In their studies on human colon cells grown in laboratory dishes, the researchers tested the anti-cancer effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts from a variety of fruits and vegetables. They retrieved these anthocyanins from grapes, radishes, purple corn, chokeberries, bilberries, purple carrots and elderberries.

The plants were chosen due to their extremely deep colors and high anthocyanin content.

The researchers found that the amount of anthocyanin extract needed to reduce cancer cell growth by 50 percent varied among the plants. Extract derived from purple corn was the most potent and used the least amount of extract (14 micrograms per milliliter of cell growth solution) to cut cell numbers in half.

Chokeberry and bilberry extracts were nearly as potent as purple corn. Radish extract was the least potent and it took nine times as much (131 milligrams per milliliter) of this compound to cut cell growth by 50 percent.

"All fruits and vegetables that are rich in anthocyanins have compounds that can slow down the growth of colon cancer cells, whether in experiments in laboratory dishes or inside the body," Giusti said.

In additional laboratory studies, researchers found that anthocyanin pigments from radish and black carrots slowed the growth of cancer cells anywhere from 50 to 80 percent.

Pigments from purple corn and chokeberries not only completely stopped the growth of cancer cells, but also killed almost 20 percent of the cancer cells while having little effect on healthy cells.

Gene Erickson and The Taste of Life

A while back, I posted a testimonial about a man named Gene Erickson who got great results using mangosteen. Now there is a video with Gene telling his own story, so I thought I would re-post the article with the updated video.

Here it is:

Mangosteen: The Taste of Life

Here is a testimony about a man who got great results from using mangosteen. Keep in mind that I am not a doctor, and I DO NOT claim that these results can be achieved by anyone, or that anyone should disregard the advice of a doctor to treat symptoms of any illness. If drinking mangosteen juice makes you feel better, by all means, continue drinking it.

A wife's 'Mangosteen Juice' Story.

About six months ago my husband became ill, his whole body and joints were racked with pain. Some mornings his hands were so swollen that they were useless until he massaged them for hours. He had no energy or appetite and he was drastically losing weight. The doctors were doing blood tests, lung x-rays and prostate exams. They ruled out cancer, but they could not find what was wrong. They said that it was possibly rheumatoid arthritis. They prescribed an anti inflammatory drug called NAPROXEN.

That relieved a lot of the swelling and pain.

After a several months the situation was getting worse instead of better. The medication was affecting his stomach so he was prescribed an over the counter drug called Zantax. He, also started taking some well known dry vitamins as well as a liquid vitamin.

The doctors decided to do a test that would require that he be off of all drugs (except for over the counter pain relievers) for seven days. My husband was in sheer agony!

My friend had spoken about 'Mangosteen Juice' several times previous. We were skeptical, but we decided that it was worth a try. So she provided us with a bottle and he immediately began taking 2 ounces in the morning and two ounces at night.

About a week later he had his color back! He had a lot more energy, some of his appetite and he was able to cut back to one Naproxen a day!

He was just about out of the 'Mangosteen Juice' but, he still had the dry vitamins as well as the liquid vitamins. So we didn't get another bottle.

It wasn't very many days after he finished the 'Mangosteen Juice' before the pain and swelling were back. He was lacking energy and he had to start taking the full dose of Naproxen and Zantec AGAIN!

Needless to say we hurried to get more 'Mangosteen Juice'. At this writing in the last month (December 2004) my husband has only had to take a total of 3 Naproxen pills - IN THE WHOLE MONTH!

I am also taking 'Mangosteen Juice' and my energy has increased beyond belief. I now sing 'Mangosteen Juice' to everyone I know and meet!!!!!!!

Statistics about Heart Disease Discussed Here

According to the statistics about heart disease published in 2006 by the Center for Disease Control, 24.7 million adults have been diagnosed with heart disease. This figure is equivalent to 11.5% of the American adult population.

Reversing heart disease may not be possible in all cases, but according to the American Heart Association, most people with cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, can live full and enjoyable lives, with the right treatment and attention to lifestyle.

The CDC is only one agency that publishes statistics about heart disease. “Diseases of the heart” is listed as the number one cause of death in the United States. It is important to remember that this figure includes all deaths caused by all of the different diseases of the heart, not just coronary artery disease, which is a narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart.

For simplicity’s sake, the National Vital Statistics Report, which is responsible for publishing these statistics about heart disease deaths, does not include subcategories in this report. It is impossible to tell how many of these deaths (654,092 in 2004) were caused by coronary artery disease, heart failure or another disease affecting the heart.

Also known as atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease is the focus of some research concerning reversing heart disease.

According to the Health Center at the University of Texas, noninvasive positron emission tomography, a technology developed by Dr. K. Lance Gould allows doctors to see where heart blood flow has been restricted by early cholesterol buildup in the arteries, with greater accuracy than previous technologies, including the stress test.

A treatment program can be designed for the individual to remove the cholesterol from the artery wall, thus reversing heart disease processes. Reversing heart disease takes time, typically 18-24 months and there is some remaining risk of heart attack during this time, but the doctors and researchers at UT believe that treatment can be quite effective. Dietary and lifestyle changes will still be necessary to prevent additional cholesterol build-up, however.

According to statistics about heart disease published by the American Heart Association, 5 million Americans are living with heart failure and approximately 500,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Coronary artery disease and heart failure are not the same conditions, but untreated coronary artery disease can lead to heart failure. These and other statistics about heart disease indicate that coronary artery disease leads to heart failure about 20% of the time, which is distressing, since the latest technology can be effective at reversing heart disease and preventing its progression to heart failure.

Some doctors and researchers believe that coronary artery disease and many other diseases can be linked to inflammatory responses within the body. Being overweight can cause inflammation all over the body. Improper diet can lead to inflammation. Type II or adult onset diabetes, one of the many risk factors for heart disease, is believed to be linked to inflammation. All of this research supports the importance of proper diet, regular exercise and weight control.

Some researchers have reached the conclusion that natural anti-inflammatories may be safer and more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs, because natural anti-inflammatories target a number of inflammatory responses, while synthetic anti-inflammatories may target only a single inflammatory molecule.

The mangosteen -- an exotic fruit from Southeast Asia, not to be confused with the common mango -- has been shown in scientific research to contain a very potent anti-inflammatory, a Cox-2 inhibitor, as well as numerous vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants that can prevent blood clots; reduce bad cholesterol and support overall function of the heart.

Patient reports indicate that it helps control diabetes; lowering blood sugar levels and reducing the need for insulin. Mangosteen products may also help those who need to get up and take a walk, by increasing energy and improving blood flow. There is no magic health elixir for preventing or reversing heart disease, but mangosteen may help.

The statistics for heart disease may be depressing, but even more depressing is the fact that 66.3% of all Americans over the age of 20 are overweight, another risk factor for developing heart disease.

So, in summary, see your doctor, follow good dietary and lifestyle habits, and perhaps try a natural anti-inflammatory like the editors at restore-your-health.com.

XanGo Receives Top Research Honors at 2007 Natural Products Trade Show

NPIcenter (press release) - Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

2007-08-02 - XanGo, LLC

LEHI, UT- Aug. 1, 2007- XanGo, LLC, recognized creator and market leader of the mangosteen supplement category, was honored for its latest mangosteen research at the 70th annual natural products trade show, Natural Marketplace 2007, in Las Vegas. The Natural Products Association awarded first place to the team led by Edward Walker, Ph.D., from Weber State University, for their poster session on the HPLC analysis of selected xanthones in the mangosteen fruit. Walker's work, in conjunction with XanGo, established a credible standard for testing and measuring xanthones in the whole mangosteen fruit.

Walker's team utilized an 80:20 acetone/water mixture to extract the xanthones from dried, ground whole mangosteen fruit rind. The mangosteen rind is considered nature's most concentrated source of xanthones, a family of phytonutrients that possess potent antioxidant properties.

"XanGo congratulates Dr. Walker and the research team for this outstanding accomplishment," said XanGo's Chief Marketing Officer John Digles. "We are dedicated to leading our category with credible research of the complete mangosteen fruit. This award-winning research, published in the June Journal of Separation Science, ensures more consistent and reliable marketing of mangosteen products to consumers relative to claims of xanthone content."
